Title:Grow Your Own Food
Artist/Designers name:Abram Games
Year:1942
Size:74 x 49 cm
Medium:Lithograph
Design Principles found in the artwork/design
1.Contrast: The spades and the ships illustration on the middle has a contrast color because it is darker than the background and foreground. Therefore, the main focus will be on that illustration.
2.Balance: There is an equal weight on both sides which we can see it clearly with our eyes. The designer divided it into two sides which illustrate the ships and spades, also having equal arrangement of elements.
3.Movement: The elements that illustrate the water on the right side seems to be moving because when we see the design, our eyes will follow the move from left to right. It's like when we see the wave.
4.Repetition: We can see the repeated elements to create the field in the left side (using green and brown colors) and also the elements to create the waves of sea on the right side (using blue and white colors)
5.Principle of continuation:The design makes our eyes follow the paths and lines (on the field and also on the sea) because it creates a continuous flow

Visual Analysis
Observation
The format of the design is portrait. The main focus of this poster is the illustration placed on the center which are the combination of spades and ships. Here i observed that there are 2 sides of illustration at the foreground, which are the field (with green grass and brown soil) and also the sea (with blue colors and also white waves). I observed that there is text at the middle and at the bottom of the poster. It is bigger, and accompanied with smaller text below it. The text has two colors, which are white and yellow. The main colors of the poster are blue, white, green, brown, and black. There is a gradation for the background that makes it more alive. (117)
Analysis
We can immediately look that this design is symmetrical inbalance because there is an equal weight and arrangement on both sides. It also has contrast color, because the shapes and the ships on the middle are darker than the background and foreground. Therefore, the main focus or the emphasize will be on that illustration. The waves flow on the right side create a movement, because when we see the design, our eyes will follow the move from left to right. The design also uses repetition to create the field on the left side (using green and brown colors), and also to create the waves of sea on the right side (using blue and white colors). There is also Principle of Continuation applied in the design because it makes our eyes follow the paths and lines (on the field and also on the sea), although it is not very effective in its application. Interpretation
This poster was design by a famous graphic designer, Abram Games who was approached to produce a recruitment poster for the Royal Armoured Corp at the start of World War II. The aim of the poster was to encourage British soldiers so that they can cultivate the land that surrounded their quarters and also make the country as self-sufficient as possible due to there were a great loss of life because merchant ships were sunk, which we can see from the illustration and the word "use spades not ships". Abram Games artwork was smooth and also strong if compared to other work back then. The style of this artwork are simple, bold, and colorful images that really highlighted the meaning of the design.

Rationale
The decisions made in your design:
I decided to try a new kind of design style to improve the poster by making it kind of like cartoon poster design with paper cutouts style to create the depth and shadow. I want this poster has a powerful message and powerful design, so that the viewers can understand immediately.I want to create a poster that highlight the man who is holding the spade by making it bigger than the other because the main message to convey is “use spades”. We must use the spades dig the soil and planting plants to produce our own food. At the back, i made an illustration that we musn’t use ships because it were sunk. These decisions improved the poster because i emphasized the spades more than the first illustration and also i made an illustration where the ships sunk, so everyone can understand the reasons about why we should not use ships for producing food.
The meaning/purpose of the design:
The aim of the poster was to encourage British soldiers so that they can cultivate the land that surrounded their quarters and also make the country as self-sufficient as possible due to there were a great loss of life because merchant ships were sunk
Design principles that are employed to create the design:
This design emphasize the man who hold the spades in the right side because the size is bigger than the other illustrations. Therefore, it will be the main focus. The plants on the soil create repetition by repeating the same elements to create harvest. The sea on the middle create movement and principle of continuation because the water seems moving and our eyes follow the movement of the waves. Emphasis also given for the text” YOUR OWN” as it is the main message from this poster. Moreover, word and image also used to describe and highlight the message.

3.REFLECTION
What have I learnt in this module?
I learnt about design principles and now i know that it is very important to create a good design. Each design principles have it own function. Moreover, i also learnt about how to create a visual analysis and also make a decent rationale for my artwork. Besides that, i also learnt that colors, fonts, and position are very important to create an eye catching design that can make the viewers understand the meaning of the design immediately.I learnt how to improve a design by using the design principles, also i learnt that research is very important to create a good design. This module also help me to enhance my skills on adobe illustrator and photoshop because i used it to create my artwork.
What did I enjoy the most?
The task that i enjoyed the most is doing research about the design principles and found the right example for each of the design. It made me gained a lot of knowledge about design principles, the important of design principles, and also it own function. Moreover, i also enjoy task 3, which i must create an improved design based on artwork chosen. For me, it is very interesting because it helps me improve my creativity. Choosing the right colors and fonts also fun and challenging.
What did I not enjoy the most?
The task that i don't really enjoy is task 2 visual analysis.I don't really like doing some analysis and doing some research about the artwork. However, i think only that task that i did not enjoy because all of the tasks are interesting.
What have I learnt about myself through this module?
I have learnt that i like "cartoon" design style because from this module, i tried to explore new style for my design and i think it is very interesting to create that kind of design. Moreover, i learnt that i like an artwork or design that has a meaningful message or strong message behind it, because i think it is interesting to convey a message through a design.
What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
What has changed is now when creating a design, i use the right design principles. Moreover, now i also do a lot more obeservation on famous designers artwork before designing and also do some research so that i can create a perfect design. What has not change in my learning journey is my enthusiasm in doing each of the task.
What are my aspirations?
I hope the knowledge that i got from this module about design principles can help me to create better design from now until the in the future. Moreover, i hope the feedback from Mr.Vinod from this module can be the guide for me to create better design everyday.
