1.LECTURES

WEEK 2
On the first week, we were explained about the MIB and also lectures about culture and design. We also have to form groups of 6 people and must be from different majors or semesters.

Visuals:
-Everything that can be seen and provide us important informations
-Nature is not a culture (except if there is representation)
-We live in a visual information culture that has explosion of visual images
-Visuals can be processed faster by our brain rather than words or sentences
-Bodhi tree is an example that nature can be a culture because it presents cultural, religious, and symbolic significance, particularly in the context of Buddhism.

Design significance:
-We will be able to identify the social, cultural & political
Fig 1.2 Design System

-Example: Western people think that the ladybug is a symbol of luck, however Japanese people think that it is a bad luck. That’s why the design system is created, it helps us to explain if there is any problem about this.

Design sensitivity:

Cultural sensitivity awareness
Symbolism and Imagery:As a designer, we must be mindful and think first before create a design to avoid misunderstandings, because it will be very sensitive if it is about culture, same symbol or imagery can carry different meanings in different culture.
Color Considerations:Colors have different types and each color has it own meaning. Different societies understand the meaning of colors differently. Before creating a cultural design, try to understand the meaning of the color in the region that has that culture.
Typography and language:Choosing the right font and ensure the right translations are very important to create a good and proper design

Addressing cultural sensitivity
Inclusive design:The aim is to develop artwork and experiences that are inclusive and accessible to each people in the world with different backgrounds
User research:Ethnographic studies and user testing across different groups
Localization:Adapting design to some cultural can make our product become more relate and we have a high chance of acceptance
Cultural Awareness Training:Develop deeper understanding from different persperctives

This angpao design became an issue because it use black color. Usually angpao use red color because in Chinese, red color means prosperity and luck.

WEEK 2
On the second week, we had guest speaker from Kuala Lumpur Design Festival.
Everyday design-Kuala Lumpur Design Festival 2024
-Design influences our lifestyle and people usually collect artwork or design based on what they like
-As a designer who lives in an era where AI is existing, we should be more flexible when creating an artwork
-Better research is very important to create a strong design

3.TASKS

PROJECT 1-PROPOSAL

For task 1, we must create 3 preliminary ideas with a short rationale about Everyday design that reflects culture, behavior, and identity. We must make a project proposal that contains the preliminary ideas and also some explanation about it (the history, values, etc).

At first, we came up with 3 ideas for the preliminary, however then we continue with the first idea (Kebaya-inspired raincoat) because it was chosen by Dr.Charles. After the consultation, we immediately do the research about our topic and create the power point slides.

PROJECT 2-DATA COLLECTION

For task 2, we must collect visual, oral, textual, and tactile artefacts based on our idea for Project Proposal (task 1). We can do observation study, interview of relevant stakeholders, and online or physical research.

We decided to conduct an interview to gain a lot of new knowledge about Kebaya at House of Danar Hadi in Surakarta and also, we did online research about various of fabrics used in Kebaya, including their types, functions, and historical backgrounds and also we did online research about the history of raincoats, suitable raincoat materials for our raincoat design, the models we plan to incorporate to our design, and the key features people prioritize when choosing a raincoat.

PROJECT 3-FINAL PROJECT

For task 3, we need to communicate our experiences through TikTok videos. The goal is to communicate our chosen cultural topic to a broader audience using our short videos that we have posted on TikTok.

We decided to make 8 videos about everyday design, why we choose raincoat, our Kebaya-inspired raincoat, the best raincoat materials, interview our friends about Kebaya, explaining our interview about Kebaya at House Of Danar Hadi, explaining more about the history of Kebaya from our PPT, and last one is reflection video.

We created different concepts for each video to make it look more interesting. We did a lot of research on existing TikTok trends and create content with a hook (an interesting opening) to attract the attention of the audience.

Moreover, we also made our final presentation slides that consists of a recap from task 1-3 and also we made our final presentation video.

4.FEEDBACK

Week 3
Dr.Charles chose the first preliminary idea (Kebaya-inspired raincoat). He said that he likes the idea and he think it will be something unique. After he looked at our PPT, he said that our slides contain too many words, so it is better to reduce the words. He also told us to add more than one sketches for the idea and added the motifs from the Kebaya for the sketch. Moreover, he told us to think about the ideas that we will use later to make the TikTok videos.

Week 5
Dr.Charles said that our PPT is already very good and suggested some interesting way to create the TikTok videos.

5.REFLECTION

From this project, I gained a lot of new knowledge, especially about the history of Kebaya and raincoat. Moreover i learnt that research is very important to create a good design. As a designer, we need to know more about the history, values, and other important informations before we create an artwork or design, especially if it is about culture. I learnt that every culture has its own meaning and characteristics, so we should not create a design about a culture that contains information that contradicts its meaning and characteristics. Moreover, i also learnt about how to create an interesting TikTok videos and attract the attention of the audience. I also learnt about how to convey and introduce Indonesian culture to the wider community and also introduce our idea about Kebaya-inspired raincoat.
