LECTURES

Lecture 1: Typographic systems (Week 1, 22/04/2025)

-Eight major variations:

1.Axial

2.Radial

3.Dilational

4.Random

5.Grid

6.Modular

7.Transitional

8.Bilateral

-Typographical organization is complex because the elements are dependent on communication in order to function

-Typographic systems are akin to what architects' term shape grammars

AXIAL SYSTEMS

-All elements are organized to the left or right of a single axis

-Elements are divided into group and placed in different angles on different sides

-The axial can be bent

RADIAL SYSTEMS

-All elements are extended from a point of focus

DILATATIONAL SYSTEMS

-All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion

-You can place the most important information on the outer or inner rings of the circle and the lesser important information is in the outer range

RANDOM SYSTEMS

-Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship

GRID SYSTEMS

-A system of vertical and horizontal divisions

-Different sizes and different weights are given to create emphasize and hierarchy

TRANSITIONAL SYSTEMS

-An informal systems or layered banding

MODULAR SYSTEMS

-Non objective elements that are constructed in as a standardised units

BILLATERAL SYSTEMS

-All text is arranged symmetrically in a single axis

Fig 1.1 Typographic System (Week 1, 22/04/2025)

Lecture 2: Typographic Composition (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND COMPOSITION

-Dominant principles underpinning design composition: symmetry, asymmetry, isolation, repetition, emphasis, alignment, perspective

-The principles tend to have been developed for 2d design

THE RULE OF THIRD
-Photographic guide to composition
-Frame divided into 3 columns and 3 rows -Intersecting lines use as guide to place the points of interest

TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS
-From the 8 typographic systems, the most used and the most pragmatic is grid system (or raster systeme) which is derived from the gridded compositional structure of letter press printing
-It was further enhanced by what now comes to be termed as the swiss (modernist) style of typography
-The hierarchy of information and how it placed within the larger grids are important
-We should divide the body text and the visual
-Order was replaced with apparent chaos but the chaos was exciting and new for a generation that was being exposed to Punk thought or music
-Symmetry, random, repetition, dilatational, and radial system began to take root in the lexicon of designer
Fig 1.2 Pictures (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

ENVIRONMENTAL GRID
-An extraction on visual lines both curved and straight are formed

Fig 1.3 Enivronmental Grids (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

-In that picture, key lines are created within this given image and the images are then discarded off

FORM AND MOVEMENT
-Based on the exploration of an existing grid systems
-This system is developed to be the multitude options, to dispel the seriousness surrounding the application of the grid system, and to see the turning of pages in a book as a slowed-down animation

Fig 1.4 Form and Movement (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

Lecture 3: Context and Creativity (Week 3, 06/05/2025)

HANDWRITING

-Crucial because the first mechanically produced letterforms were designed to imitate handwriting

-The shape and line of hand drawn letterforms are influenced by the tools and materials used to make it, such as sharpened bones, charcoal sticks, plant stems, brushes, feather, and steel pens to create the characteristic

EVOLUTION OF LATIN ALPHABET

-Phoenician is where writing or the documentation of written language takes turn where know is based on sound as supposed to pictorial represent of something

-Cuneiform (c. 300 B.C.E) distinctive wedge was the result of pressing the blunt end of a reed stylus into white clay tablets

-Hieroglyphics (2613-2160 B.C.E) was a mixture of both rebus and phonetic characters which was the first link to a future alphabet system. It can be used as ideograms, determinatives to show that the sign preceding are meant as phonograms that indicate the general idea of the word, and as phonograms to represent sounds that "spell out: individual words

-Early Greek (5th C. B.C.E) consisting of 22 letters and was adopted by the Greeks who added necessary vowels. The direction of reading was not fixed yet. Greek was often read in a format known as boustrophedon where one row would read left to right and then switch from right to left. They have no serifs, however in time the strokes of those letters grew thicker, the aperture lessened, and serifs appeared.

-Roman Uncials (4th Century) made letters became more rounded and the curved form allowed for lelss strokes and could be written faster

-English half uncials (8th C.) evolved into a more slanted and condensed form

-Emperor Charlemagne (8 C. C.E) resulted a breakdown of handwriting into a diverse regional style

-Carolingian Minsucule was where the book production increased and language was standardized, starting to use capital for the first sentence, spaces between words and punctuation. This style became the pattern of the humanistic writing of the fifteenth century.

-Black Letter (12-15 C. C.E) which was also known as gothic that is the culminating artistic expression of the Middle Ages. It was refer to rude or barbaric cultures. The characteristic is tight spacing and condensed lettering

-The Italian Renaissance which the humanist in Italy were slowly reviving the culture of antiquity and admired the Carolingian script. The humanist named the newly rediscovered letterforms Antica

-Movable Type (11. C - 14.C) where printing (woodblock) had already been practiced in Korea, Japan, China. This innovation was pioneered in China but achieved in Korea. In the late 1300-1399 CE, the Koreans establish a foundry to cast movable type in bronze

Fig 1.6 Evolution of Latin Alphabet (Week 3, 06/05/2025)

EASTERN DEVELOPMENTS IN HAND WRITTEN

-Evolution of middle eastern alphabet: the script of the phoenician letter was influenced by the Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Hieratic Scripts
-The evolution of the Chinese script: from the oracle bone to seal script to clerical script, traditional and simplified scripts
-The oldest writting found in the 'Indian' subcontinent the IVC Script (3500-2000 BCE): somewhat logo-syllabic in nature
-The Brahmi Script (450-350 BCE): the earliest writing system developed in India after indus script

Fig 1.7 Eastern Developments in handwritten (Week 3, 06/05/2025)

HANDWRITING
-Pallava was the most important and the oldest writing system from South India that originally used for writing Sanskrit or Tamil
-Pra-nagari was also used in India for writing script
-There was also Kawi that came from the Sanskrit term Kavya meaning poet and used for contact with other kingdoms
-Kawi became the basis of other scripts in both Indonesia and Philippines
-There was Incung from Kerinci and also Bugis Script
-Another handwriting was Jawi (the Arabic based alphabet) that was taught by the traders in missionary work and spread among the upper and middle class in the trading ports
-In modern Malaysia, Jawi is important because it was used for all famous works literature like Hikayat and Malay charm book

PROGRAMMERS AND TYPE DESIGNER
-More vernacular scripts are being produced by software giants (google)

Fig 1.10 Programmer (Week 3, 06/05/2025)

LOCAL MOVEMENTS AND INDIVIDUALS
-The programming language needed to encode the different types of vernacular writing systems and was cracked by Muthu and it is now used on mobile phone and desktop
-Huruf (a local group graphic designers interested in the localized lettering of latin and vernacular letters

INSTRUCTIONS

EXERCISE 1: TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS

BRIEF
-We must make each design of typography systems (axial, radial, bilateral, modular, dilatational, random, grid, and transitional)
-We must use Adobe InDesign only
-The size is 200 x 200 mm
-We can use black and other color
-Graphical elements can be used (Line, dot, etc) but limitedly

REFERENCE
First, i read the book by Kimberly Elam about typographic systems, after i understand the typography systems, i found some references from the pinterest for all of the 8 systems.

PROGRESS

Fig 3.2 Progress (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

Fig 3.3 Progress (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

8 TYPOGRAPHY SYSTEMS

Axial

Fonts used
First design: ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold, Roman)
Second design: ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold, Roman)
Third design: Futura Std (Bold Condensed), Bodoni Std (Bold, Roman), ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold), Bembo Std (Regular, Bold)
Fourth design: Bodoni Std (Bold condensed, Bold Italic, Bold, Roman), Bembo Std (Bold)

Fig 3.4 Axial (Week 1, 27/04/2025)
For Axial, i came out with 4 design ideas and divided the information with the straight lines and also for the fourth design i bent the lines to make a variation. I used the font that represent punk and highlight it using red colors because it is the main point. Moreover, i used bold font to represent punk more.

Radial

Fonts used
First design: ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold), Bembo Std (Bold, Italic, Regular), Futura Std (Bold Condensed, Extra bold), Bodoni Std (Bold Condensed)
Second design: Futura Std (Bold), Bodoni Std (Bold condensed), Bembo Std (Bold, Italic, Regular), Gill Sans MT (Bold Italic), ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold)

Fig 3.5 Radial (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

It took a long time to make radial because it is quite hard to make the pointing the circle and to make it very tidy. This system is very related to punk, because the circle element in the design represents the anarchy logo which is usually related to punk (the logo is a circle with the letter A). I used contrast color to depict the bold music (punk music).

Grid

Fonts used
First design: ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold), Bodoni Std (Bold condensed, Bold Italic, Bold), Futura Std (Bold), Bembo Std (Italic), Bembo Std (Bold, Regular, Italic), Gill Sans MT (Bold)
Second design: ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold, Roman), Futura Std (Bold condensed), Bembo Std (Bold., Regular),

Fig 3.6 Grid (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

For the first design, I used black color for the background because black also represent punk, therefore black and red is the best combination. I divided the information based on the grid.

Bilateral

Fonts used
First design: Futura Std (Bold condensed, Extra Bold), ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold), Bembo (Bold, Regular)
Second Design: ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold), Bembo Std (Italic, Bold, Regular), Futura Std (Bold condensed, Extra bold),

Fig 3.7 Bilateral (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

For this system, i made it symmetrical and i tilt the text to create variation.

Transitional

Fonts used
First design: Futura Std (Bold condensed), ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold), Bembo Std (Regular)
Second designITC New baskerville Std (Bold), Futura Std (Light condensed),

Fig 3.8 Transitional (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

For the first design, i used ripped elements that represent punk because punk is related with ripped pants. The layout is not completely symmetrical, which is related to punk because it gives the impression of free and unfettered energy. For the second design, i used the circle again that is related to punk, which is anarchy (the logo is a circle with the letter A).

Dilatational

Fonts used
First design: Bembo Std (Bold), ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold), Futura Std (Bold)
Second design: ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold, Italic), Bembo Std (Italic, Bold)

Fig 3.9 Dilatational (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

For the first design i made it all half circle because i wanted to create a CD. Punk is a music, so definitely it is related to CD. For the second design, i wanted to bold the punk and highlight it the most.

Modular

Fonts used
First design: Futura Std (Bold condensed, Heavy), ITC New Baskerville Std (Bold), Bembo Std (Bold, Italic),
Second design: Futura Std (Bold condensed, Heavy), Bembo Std (Bold, Regular, Italic), Bodoni Std (Bold, Book Italic),

Fig 3.10 Modular (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

For this system, i made it using the video tutorial from Mr.Vinod

Random

Fig 3.11 Random (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

This system is actually the best system to create punk design, because punk is chaos.

After designing all of the systems, i decided to choose this design for the final outcome

Fig 3.12 Chosen Designs (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

After receiving feedback from Mr.Vinod (Week 2 class), i changed the font size for the text to 8-12. Moreover, i also improve the dilatational because Mr.Vinod said that the dilatational already better but can be better. Furthermore, i also added some space for the transitional and reduced the circle.

EXERCISE 2: TYPE & PLAY

BRIEF
We were asked to select an image of a man-made object that does not contain many different elements. We should analyse, dissect, and identify potential letterforms. After that, we must choose reference font and then refined celebration that would reflect to a degree its origins

IMAGE USED

IMAGE CHOSEN FOR THE FILM POSTER
POSTER PROGRESS ON PHOTOSHOP

First i added texture for the poster to make it more real like a film, then i added the font as the title of the film poster. I chose orange for the color because it suits the poster, and also orange color is a good choice for promoting good value. Moreover, i also added some description such as the producer and also director.
Fig 4.22 Poster Progress (Week 3, 11/05/2025)

Mr.Vinod said that we must have the dolby logo on our poster, therefore i found the right logo and then i changed the color on adobe illustrator and bring it to photoshop based like what Mr.Vinod taught us. Moreover, i also added sony and imax logo for the poster. Last, i added other details and finalize the poster.

WEEK 4 FEEDBACK
Mr.Vinod said that the poster and font already good, however he suggests me to change the description of the poster into white color. Moreover, he also suggests making the letter slightly highlighted. Therefore, i improved the poster.

PROGRESS TO IMPROVE THE POSTER

First i changed all of the information and description colors into white based on what Mr.Vinod said

FEEDBACK

Week 4
General Feedback: Last consultation with Mr.Vinod for type and play exercise
Specific Feedback: Mr.Vinod said that the poster and font already good, however he suggest me to change the description of the poster into white color. Moreover, he also suggest to make the letter slightly highlighted
Week 3
General Feedback: Consultation with Mr.Vinod for type and play exercise, Mr.Vinod said that we must have a strong observation from our chosen image
Specific Feedback: The noodle has a consistent characteristic, but it is not being captured on the final font. It doesn’t come to mind that it is noodle when people look at it. You don't observe enough.
Week 2
General Feedback: Consultation with Mr.Vinod for typpghraphic systems and also brief for type and play exercise
Specific Feedback: Random is interesting, it is good. Radial is good. Modular and bilateral is good and acceptable. Transitional is interesting, a little bit spacing between the lines there maybe works better, reduction of the dots there. Dilatational looks challenging. The text information size must be 8-12.
Week 1
Mr.Vinod gave us some brief about exercise 1, gave us the correct example about the blogger, and also told  us about what we should do for next week

REFLECTION

Experience
After doing exercise 1, i got a lot of new knowledge about typographic system and also how to make each system. I also learnt how to create a good design for the typographic system by finding some references from the pinterest and Kimberly Elam book. Furthermore, after doing exercise 2 about type and play, now i learnt how to observe the characteristic of a nature or manmade picture and make a font based on it.

Observation
I realized that each system has it own unique. Moreover, i realized that actually A good design actually depends on each person preference. In Exercise 1 I had difficulty choosing which designs I would collect and I asked several people for their opinions on their choices, however the answers are all different. Furtheemore, in exercise 2 i realized that observation is very important to create a perfect font with a strong characteristic of image chosen.

Findings
For me, paying attention to the requirements and how to create a typographic system is very important to create good and accurate design. Also, for me, creating a font based on nature or manmade picture can increase our creativity

FURTHER READING

Week 1
Fig 8.1 Kimberley Elam Typographic System Book (Week 1, 27/04/2025)
Project elements and process
-An understanding of systems of visual organization gives the designer an in-depth knowledge of the design process
-The eight typography systems: axial, radial, bilateral, random, dilatational, modular, grid, transitional
-Systems are investigated in two ways:
1.The series of composition constrained to one size or one weight of type
2. A series of composition with the option to use non objective elements and changes in tone to enhance the communication of the message

Constraints and Options
Fig 8.2 Kimberley Elam Typographic System Book (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

-When the format is small and several of the line lengths are long, one of the first options is to break the lines
-When lines are broken intuitively in a logical pattern, the result is a grouping of lines of text that belong together
Fig 8.3 Kimberley Elam Typographic System Book (Week 1, 27/04/2025)

Week 2

5 steps to do type and play exercise:
1.Finding an image
-The image must have strong and consistent character

Fig 8.4 Images example (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

2.Deconstructing an image
-Student can ooutline the image or simply outline the identified shapes
-The observation of the constituent shape, nature of the lines, and texture are important

Fig 8.5 Deconstructing example (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

3.Identifying Letterforms
-As long as the letter is resembling the basic shape, it is acceptable

Fig 8.6 Identifying Letterform Examples (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

4.Extracting Letterforms
-Core characteristic must be identified, and a potential direction must be determined

Fig 8.7 Extracting Letterform Examples (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

5.Identify a reference typeface
-Typeface must suits the art direction
-Reference font is as a guide to determine the shape or form
Fig 8.8 Identify Reference Typeface Examples (Week 2, 30/04/2025)

6.Refining Letterforms
-We must refine the letter until it is consistent, uniform, and stylistically similar to another letter

Fig 8.9 Refining Letterform Examples (Week 2, 30/04/2025)
